Students talk to Vanessa Feltz on BBC Radio London about being Mayor for the day.

Students from Hammersmith Academy appeared on the Vanessa Feltz Breakfast Show on Friday 1st December to talk about their healthy eating campaign devised for the London Children’s Festival ‘Mayor for the Day’ event.

Their campaign is titled ‘Freaky Foodie Friday’ and encourages young people across London to eat healthily by learning to cook and doing the food shopping, swapping roles with their parents on a Friday evening. The students who took part in devising the campaign felt that fellow young people don’t understand what ingredients go into their meals and therefore can’t appreciate what is and isn’t healthy. By being involved in the whole process, not just cooking but purchasing the ingredients too, children will acquire all the skills required to produce a healthy meal for the rest of their lives.

Vanessa also discussed with our students what they would do if they were Mayor of London for the day, and our students focused on eradicating homelessness and boosting overall happiness. Ruby, a student in Year 8 who spoke to Vanessa, said “it was an exciting experience being on live radio and talking about what we would do if we were Mayor of London for the day. It’s amazing to think I was being listened to by thousands of Londoners”.
