Year 10 – 11
Spanish
Key Stage: KS4
Exam Board: AQA
Qualification Gained: GCSE Spanish
Assessment Structure:
The AQA GCSE Spanish qualification is assessed across the four core language skills:
- Listening (25%) – Understanding and responding to spoken passages on familiar and unfamiliar topics.
- Reading (25%) – Interpreting written texts, including authentic and literary materials.
- Speaking (25%) – Conducting conversations, role-plays and photo card discussions, assessing fluency and pronunciation.
- Writing (25%) – Producing extended written responses, translations and creative or formal tasks in Spanish.
Students complete all components at either Foundation or Higher Tier. Assessment is designed to reward both linguistic competence and cultural understanding.
Spanish at Hammersmith Academy inspires curiosity, cultural understanding and confidence, enabling students to engage with the Spanish-speaking world and communicate effectively in a second language. By mastering new vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, students gain the tools to express themselves clearly and appreciate the diversity of Hispanic cultures around the globe.
The GCSE Spanish curriculum consolidates and extends the linguistic and cultural foundations established at Key Stage 3. Students continue to develop their ability to listen, read, speak and write with precision and creativity, applying language in authentic and meaningful contexts.
In Year 9, which forms a bridge between Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, students revisit key themes such as identity, relationships, free time and holidays, reinforcing core vocabulary and grammatical structures. From Year 10 onward, they explore more complex topics while practising communication, interpretation and justification — key skills for both GCSE success and real-world interaction.
The Key Stage 4 course follows the AQA GCSE Spanish specification, structured around three broad themes:
- Identity and Culture
- Local, National, International and Global Areas of Interest
- Current and Future Study and Employment
Through these themes, students explore topics such as technology, school life, work and careers, environmental issues, health, customs and festivals. The curriculum spirals content and skills, gradually increasing grammatical complexity — including confident use of future, conditional and imperfect tenses — and encouraging students to communicate opinions with justification.
Students also develop familiarity with exam-style tasks, practising translation, comprehension and spoken interaction to build confidence and fluency. By the end of Key Stage 4, learners can understand and respond to a variety of authentic texts and confidently express themselves in Spanish-speaking environments.
