Year 10 – 11

English Language

Key Stage: KS4

Exam Board: Edexcel

Qualification Gained: GCSE English Language

Our students explore a diverse body of texts through our curriculum to build their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of Language and Literature. Through this, students become confident, independent thinkers who can communicate effectively in preparation for the wider world.

GCSE English Language at Hammersmith Academy equips students with the skills needed to read critically, write with precision and purpose, and communicate clearly in both spoken and written contexts. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, students develop a deep understanding of how writers construct meaning and how language can shape ideas, emotions and perspectives.

Throughout Key Stage 4, students refine their ability to:

  • Analyse fiction and non-fiction texts
  • Identify how writers use language and structure for effect
  • Craft creative and transactional writing for different audiences and purposes
  • Compare viewpoints across texts
  • Use vocabulary and grammar with accuracy and intent
  • Express ideas confidently in discussion, debate and presentation

While English Language is taught as a distinct GCSE, elements of the Literature curriculum are interwoven to deepen reading skills and support the development of analytical writing. This combined approach ensures students become insightful, effective communicators ready for examination success and life beyond school.
