Year 10 – 11

Physical Education

Key Stage: KS4

Qualification Gained: This is a core subject for all students, no formal qualification (statutory curriculum subject)

Assessment Breakdown: There are no formal examinations. Assessment is ongoing and based on participation, engagement, and development of physical skills, fitness, and understanding of health and wellbeing.

Core PE at Hammersmith Academy inspires students to develop their physical, emotional and social wellbeing through regular participation in physical activity. Our aim is to create meaningful, engaging experiences that motivate students to be active for life, build confidence and develop positive habits that extend far beyond their school years.

Throughout Key Stage 4, students continue to engage in a broad programme of physical activities designed to promote enjoyment, participation and long-term health. The emphasis in Core PE is not on performance or assessment of sporting ability, but on effort, engagement and developing positive attitudes toward physical activity.

Students experience a wide variety of sports and fitness-based activities aimed at helping them:

  • Discover physical activities they genuinely enjoy
  • Build fitness, resilience and confidence
  • Maintain good physical and mental wellbeing
  • Understand the importance of regular exercise
  • Develop teamwork, communication and leadership skills

Core PE plays a vital role in helping students lead balanced, healthy lives, supporting improved concentration, wellbeing and academic performance.

We also provide opportunities for off-site PE, enabling students to explore activities beyond the school grounds and develop links with local clubs and community providers.red the necessary theory.

Year-by-Year Curriculum

Year 10 Core PE

Year 10 students participate in a diverse range of sports, including Netball, Football, Basketball, Badminton, Table Tennis and Athletics.

A standout feature of Year 10 is the Rowing programme, delivered in partnership with Fulham Reach Rowing Club, giving every student the chance to experience rowing on the Thames. This initiative forms part of our whole-academy strategy to widen access to a traditionally selective sport.

Year 11 Core PE

Students again take part in a broad mix of activities, including Netball, Football, Basketball, Badminton and Table Tennis.

In addition, all students experience a block of BMX cycling at Wormwood Scrubs, supporting cycling confidence and providing beginner sessions for those who cannot yet ride. This promotes independence, safety and a key life skill.
