Years 12 – 13

KS5 Curriculum

BTEC and AAQ qualifications at Hammersmith Academy offer a rigorous, respected pathway for students who want to combine academic depth with practical, real-world learning. These courses are designed for ambitious students who thrive through applied study, independent project work and assessment — and who want clear progression to university, apprenticeships or professional employment.

BTEC & AAQ pathways sit alongside our A Level provision as an equally aspirational route, supporting students to develop deep subject knowledge while building the transferable skills that universities and employers value highly.

For students who do not wish to study a full suite of A Levels, BTEC & AAQ qualifications provide a highly structured, challenging alternative — offering academic credibility, clear progression and strong outcomes without compromising on ambition.

BTEC/AAQ Curriculum Subjects

Specialist Teaching

All BTEC & AAQ courses are taught by subject specialists with deep expertise in their fields. Lessons are structured, placing strong emphasis on:

  • Applied knowledge and real-world contexts
  • Independent research and extended project work
  • Practical skills linked to industry contexts
  • Analytical thinking, evaluation and reflection

Assessment is ongoing, allowing students to demonstrate progress consistently across coursework, projects and applied tasks — developing resilience, organisation and professionalism over time.

Developing Skills for the Future

BTEC & AAQ students graduate with far more than a qualification. Through applied learning, they develop the skills that prepare them for success beyond Sixth Form, including:

  • Communication and presentation skills
  • Collaboration and leadership
  • Confidence in professional and academic settings

These qualities are embedded throughout the curriculum and reinforced through enrichment, work experience and employer engagement.

Preparing for University, Apprenticeships and Employment

BTEC & AAQ qualifications are highly valued by universities and employers alike. Our students progress to a wide range of destinations, including:

  • Russell Group and specialist universities
  • Competitive degree apprenticeships or apprenticeships
  • Employment within professional, technical and creative sectors

Our dedicated Careers and University Team works closely with every Sixth Form student to ensure applications are ambitious, competitive and personalised. This includes:

  • One-to-one UCAS and apprenticeship guidance
  • Personal statement and portfolio support
  • Interview preparation and employability coaching
  • Access to work experience and employer networks

Students are supported to keep multiple pathways open — ensuring they leave Sixth Form with clarity, confidence and strong outcomes.

An Ambitious Pathway with Real Outcomes

BTEC & AAQ pathways at Hammersmith Academy are not alternatives — they are deliberate, high-expectation routes designed for students who want their education to translate directly into future success.

Through specialist teaching, applied learning and outstanding careers support, our students leave us equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive in higher education, apprenticeships and the world of work.
