Year 12 – 13

Core Mathematics

Key Stage: KS5

Exam Board: AQA

Qualification Gained: A Level Core Mathematics

Assessment Breakdown:

Entry Requirements: Eight or more GCSEs at grades 9-4 including a minimum grade 5 in Mathematics.

To develop confident, independent learners who achieve their full academic potential while strengthening their understanding of the principles and wide-ranging applications of Mathematics.

Mathematics enables students to understand and explain the world around them. Numeracy supports many aspects of everyday life, from shopping and budgeting to interpreting information and understanding financial decisions. Mathematical skills are also essential across a wide range of professional fields, including finance, engineering, computer science, and the social sciences.

As well as preparing students for assessment and future pathways, the course seeks to:

  • Instil curiosity and enjoyment in mathematical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity
  • Develop fluency in number, algebra, geometry, and statistics
  • Encourage students to question, reason, generalise, and apply knowledge in real-world contexts
  • Promote cross-curricular learning, recognising the role of mathematics in science, technology, geography, and beyond

Core Mathematics offers a practical and engaging post-16 course designed to strengthen and extend GCSE knowledge. It is particularly suited to students who wish to continue developing mathematical skills to support subjects such as psychology, biology, geography, business, and the social sciences. The course is designed to:

  • Build confidence in applying mathematics to real-world contexts, including financial planning, modelling, and understanding risk
  • Develop critical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills
  • Strengthen mathematical literacy for academic and professional communication
  • Support success in subjects requiring statistical analysis and graphical interpretation

Curriculum Overview

Year 12

The Year 12 programme focuses on applying mathematics in authentic contexts, with an emphasis on data analysis, financial understanding, and statistical reasoning.

Modules include:

Module 1: Estimation, Correlation, and Regression

Students explore modelling relationships between variables and interpreting trends in data.

Module 2: Data Collection, Representation, and Statistical Analysis

Development of skills in gathering, representing, and analysing data using appropriate statistical methods.

Module 3: Data Interpretation, Personal Finance, and Statistical Inference

Application of statistical reasoning to real-world scenarios, including personal finance contexts.

Module 4: Personal Finance and Statistical Estimation

Deeper exploration of financial decision-making and estimation techniques.

Modules 5–6: Revision

Consolidation of knowledge and preparation for final assessment.

Skills Gained

Students develop:

  • Critical analysis of data in real-world contexts
  • Clear communication of numerical information using graphs and statistical indicators
  • Confident use of technology to analyse and present data
  • Application of mathematical ideas to financial contexts
  • Understanding of statistical concepts to interpret and critique quantitative information

These skills equip students to make informed decisions, engage critically with data, and apply mathematics effectively in academic, professional, and everyday settings.

Partnerships & Enrichment

Students benefit from wider enrichment opportunities through engagement with:

  • Mayor’s Fund for London
  • Jack Petchey Foundation

These partnerships support students in applying mathematical thinking to real-world contexts, developing confidence, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of how mathematics is used beyond the classroom.
